IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE IN NIGERIA

Physical fitness in Nigeria is of great importance to everyone (male and female, young and old) as it is strongly health related. The life expectancy in Nigeria is about 53 years and this is the average period a person is expected to live in the country. Causes of this varies from terrorism, accidents, and various diseases.
Although exercise may not directly reduce an individual's chances of deaths from terrorism and various communicable diseases, exercise is a major medicine in the prevention and management of several non communicable diseases which can lead to death such as hypertension, diabetics, obesity, among others.
Exercise has numerous benefits from various perspectives. Looking at the definition by the World Health Organization, they described health as the complete state of physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease of infirmity. Hence, one can look at the benefit of exercise based on these components of health;
A. Physical Benefits of Exercise
1. Helps develop good posture
2. Helps reduces obesity
3. Helps increase muscular strength and endurance
4. Helps maintain a good blood pressure and resting heart rate
5. Helps improve flexibility
6. Helps in good joint mobility
7. Helps reduce the effect of aging
B. Mental/Psychological Benefits of Exercise
1. Helps increase mental alertness
2. Helps improve early brain development especially among children
3. Helps in boosting confidence
4. Help in stress management
5. Helps an individual reduce depression
C. Social Benefits of Exercise
1. Helps improve social skills
2. Helps an individual attain/maintain a socially acceptable body image
3. Helps an individual meet more people during outdoor sports/recreational events
