The major difference between indoor and outdoor recreation lies in the type of environment and type of activity done.

Outdoor recreational activities are usually done in an open space, park or field while indoor recreational activities are usually done under a roof in a building.

Another difference between indoor and outdoor recreation is the influence of weather on the duration of recreational activity and level of participation. While indoor recreational activities can be ongoing irrespective of rain, snow, fog, extreme cold, extreme sunlight, sand storm, outdoor recreational activities will likely be cut short because of the weather.

There are some outdoor recreational activities that cannot be comfortably done indoors such as mountain climbing (height limitations), surfing (difficult to put ocean waves indoors), hiking e.t.c. There are also some indoor recreational activities that cannot be comfortably done outdoors such as playing squash (because of the playing area), playing badmiton and table tennis (because of the light ball and the unpredictable nature of the wind direction), e.t.c
It is important to note that during competitive sports some recreational games like badminton, table tennis would not be played outdoors because of the effect of weather. However during recreation, since there are no specific rules and regulations, it can be played and enjoyed outdoors.

It is, however, important to note that in modern times as a result of advent in technology, many outdoor recreational activities can now be done indoors. For example, mountain climbing can be done indoors if humans want to make it possible, all they need to do is build a giant building around a mountain (I know it sounds crazy, but its possible). That's why I am not completely ruling it out as I conclude this article on the difference between indoor and outdoor recreation.
