CRITERIA FOR STUDYING SPORTS IN NIGERIA

Sports is an interesting area of study in many countries around the world today. It is no more news that sports is a multi billion dollars industry that provides millions of jobs to individuals around the world. Sports requires a lots of professionals to run it at various areas from the business angle, the legal area, the health and safety aspect, the fitness angle, the coaching area, the broadcasting angle, the administration and management, the psychology among others. These professional actually ensures the progress and development of sports in their respective areas.

Sports is very broad and to study sports it is usually advised one specialise in one of the areas or at least have an area of interest. This will help an individual go through the right path to have a career in sports as a professional working in the industry. For example, if your area of interest is sports medicine, one would go through a totally different line from what a sports journalist would right from schooling to gathering working experience.

In Nigeria today, to study sports one should have in mind the area of specialization in sports so as to know what courses to take and what path is right to get to the desired profession. The following are areas/courses one can take to be a sports professional in Nigeria.

1. Sports Coach:
a. Study Physical Education at the College of education or University (Not compulsory)
b. Study sports coaching at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) or any other accredited coaching school. (Compulsory).
2. Fitness Instructor/ Personal Trainer:
a. Get a diploma in Physical Education or Human Kinetics
b. Get a B.Sc in Physical Education or Human Kinetics
c. Get a postgraduate degree in Exercise Physiology
d. Get certification from a fitness association as a personal trainer.
3. Sports Physiotherapist:
a. Get a degree in Physiotherapy from a University
b. Get a masters degree in sports physiotherapy
c. Have at least 500hours of working experience with a sports physiotherapist
4. Sports Psychologist:
a. Get a bachelors degree in physical education or human kinetics
b. Get a bachelors degree in psychology
c. Get a postgraduate degree in sports psychology
5. Sports Administrator or Manager
a. Get a bachelors degree in physical education or human kinetics
b. Get a bachelors degree in business administration and management
c. Get a postgraduate degree in sports administration and management
6. Exercise Physiologist
a. Get a bachelors degree in physiology, physiotherapy, human kinetics, or other allied health courses.
b. Get a postgraduate degree in exercise physiology
7. Physical Education Teacher
a. Study physical education or human kinetics from a University or College of Education.
b. Do an internship or teaching practice for at least 12 weeks in a school
8. Sports Medicine
a. Study medicine at the University
b. Get a further postgraduate degree in sports medicine.
c. Get at least 500 hours working with a sport medical practitioner
9. Sports Journalist
a. Get a bachelors degree in physical education, human kinetics, mass communication or journalism.
b. Study sports journalism at an accredited school of journalism.
