How to Revive Sports in Nigeria - Dr Victor Ademola

As someone trained in sport, with several degrees and awards, I know that real and lasting sports development depends on more than just discovering talent. We need passionate grassroots coaches (many of whom need proper training), accessible and well maintained facilities, and structured programmes that guide athletes from early identification all the way to elite performance. This includes proper training, competitions, nutrition, mental health support and long term development plans.

Sports must also be made valuable to citizens through competitions, media coverage, merchandising and community engagement. When people see the excitement, pride and economic benefits, the system becomes sustainable.

In societies where many citizens have limited income, sustaining sports financially can be challenging. But this can be addressed through government and private sector support, affordable community programs, sponsorships and media partnerships.

Combined with good governance, consistent policies, regular monitoring and anti-corruption measures, these elements create a system where sports development is real, lasting and impactful. Miss any piece and progress stalls.

This is my Sunday evening thought.
