History of Boxing in Nigeria

Amateur boxing started in Nigeria alongside professional boxing because the men that run amateur are also responsible for organizing pro boxing in the country. Mr. Bob. Fraulkner, a welfare officer in Lagos introduced boxing to the youths in Lagos in 1943. The formation of youth clubs  saw the birth of youths activities in earnest in 1944; and boxing was the prominent game for the boys. The spread of youth clubs from Lagos island to Mainland at the end of 1944, encouraged the spread of boxing and eventually led to organizing competitions between Island boxing clubs and Mainland Boxing clubs. After having such competitions for almost two years, (1994 to 1946), it eventually led to the formation of an Association. Ademola (2018) defined sports as any activity that uses physical and intellectual capacity done by an individual or between individuals usually following established rules and regulations to establish an outcome which could be a win, loss or draw. It is important to note that sports could be professional (earning a living) or amateur (not earning a living). Sports is usually competitive in nature however, the spirit of fair play is needed in sports as winning at all cost is not encouraged. Intramural sports in Nigeria dates back to the first group of schools established in the country. These sports event served as a veritable means of talent identification and development as many athletes discovered in time past came through intramural sports and were further groomed to the elite and professional level.
